Il dominio reale di Laeken è un'enorme area verde con prati, cespugli e stagni. È una parte importante del corridoio ecologico che è il canale. Aironi blu vengono qui a costruire i loro nidi e a catturare pesci. La colonia di aironi nel dominio reale è la più grande della regione di Bruxelles. Sui rami robusti di grandi alberi si trovano in totale circa 200 nidi, alcuni dei quali sono visibili dal canale. L' airone blu è un grande trampoliere (lungo da 84 a 102 cm), con un piumaggio prevalentemente grigio.
