Is er dan een tectonische opstuwing gebeurd de laatste 100 jaar? De verklaring zit in de gebeurtenis in 1919 in de Spiegelzaal (Galerie des Glaces) van het Paleis van Versailles. Daar werd het Verdrag van Versailles ondertekend waarbij de Oostkantons bij België kwamen na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. België wilde de Oostkantons omdat ze als “bufferzone” dienden tegen Duitsland én omdat ze economisch interessant waren: bosrijk, met spoorlijnen en vooral met de lucratieve zinkmijn van Vieille Montagne in Neutraal Moresnet vlakbij.
