En Menen se puede encontrar el mayor cementerio militar alemán en Bélgica. Aquí están enterrados aproximadamente 47,900 soldados alemanes. Menen estuvo en manos alemanas durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Este cementerio se ubicaba cerca de un bosque y recibió el nombre de ‘Meenen Wald’. En los años 50 se decidió fusionar todos los cementerios alemanes en Bélgica en 4 cementerios de concentración. Menenwald se amplió así con alrededor de 40,000 soldados caídos identificados.
