Che ci sia una lampada da minatore alla stazione di Tollembeek non è un caso. Dalla Galmaarden, Viane, Herne e Tollembeek, a metà del secolo scorso, molti abitanti partirono per il Belgio per lavorare nelle miniere. Venivano chiamati fossemannen. Pascal Verbeken lo descrive magnificamente nel suo libro Grand Central Belge: “Erano estranei nel loro stesso comune e estranei in Wallonia”. Descrive come il residente Jozef Agneessens partisse ogni giorno per la miniera di carbone di Monceau-Fontaine n°14 di Roux-Souvret vicino a Charleroi. Partiva alle 4 del mattino, andava in bicicletta fino a Tollembeek per prendere il treno alle 4:30. Poi in treno attraverso Edingen, La Louvière, Piéton, Trazegnies e Roux. Alle 6:40 in bicicletta verso Souvret. Alle 7 si scendeva con la cabina dell'ascensore. Si lavorava fino alle tre. E poi di nuovo a casa.
