Achel er kendt for Achelse Kluis, et trappistkloster der delvist ligger på hollandsk grund. Dette kloster brygger sit eget øl, trappistøllen kaldet Achel. Den første skriftlige omtale af Achel stammer fra 1139, da navnet blev skrevet som Achile. Aghel og Aeghelen er nyere betegnelser. Navnet er sammensat af ordene aha og lo. Aha betyder vand, som henviser til Warmbeek. En lo er en skov på sandet grund og lå ofte tæt på en bosættelse. Achel betyder altså "Den lille skov på sandgrund ved vandet".
