Su entrambi i lati dell'Aa si trovano i resti della 'Diga di Mendoza'. Questo oggetto, una diga tra le due creste di sabbia, non ha nulla a che fare con un condottiero di quel nome, ma risale al 1700. È stata costruita per timore di un attacco dei francesi dal sud. Creando un bacino imbrifero deviando il torrente Aa o Weerijs', che scorre verso Breda, si creò un lago artificiale. Se il nemico era in avvicinamento, si rimuoveva la diga. Così, l'area intorno alla città veniva allagata: un perfetto strumento di difesa.
