Bolonya és la capital de la regió d'Emília-Romanya i de la Ciutat metropolitana de Bolonya, entre els rius Reno i Sàvena, prop dels Apenins. Es troba a 90 km de Florència, a una mica més d'una hora de tren de Parma, i a 150 km de Venècia, al nord-est. És una de les ciutats històriques més ben conservades i la setena més gran d'Itàlia per població.
