Essex Farm Cemetery har sit navn fra en gård, der lå på dette sted og blev kaldt Essex Farm på britiske generalstabskort. Her hviler 1199 faldne fra Commonwealth. I bunkeren ved siden af gården skrev den canadiske læge John McCrae den 3. maj 1915 det verdensberømte digt "In Flanders Fields". Han døde den 28. januar 1918 af lungebetændelse og meningitis og blev begravet i Wimereux (Frankrig).
