Det brune øl har gjort Oudenaarde til en berømt ølby. På den modsatte side af Schelde kan du se bygningerne fra det berømte bryggeri Liefmans. Her blev den første 'brune' tappet i 1770. I dag brygges der stadig efter en 300 år gammel opskrift. Kirsebærøllen begyndte først meget senere at skumme. Bryguppen, med kogekar, køleskibe og baudelot-kølere, er stadig lavet af rødt kobber.
I dag er Liefmans en del af Duvel Moortgat Gruppen.
