Karel van de Woestijne blev født den 10. marts 1878 i Sint-Lievensstraat 348, nu Sint-Lievenspoortstraat 264, "en bred, tom, bleg gade" ("Paidia"). Han var den ældste af de fire sønner af kobberbehandler Alexander Joannes og Antigona Sielbo.
Under Bogmessen i 1960 afslørede Miel Kersten for de katolske østflamske forfattere søndag den 28. marts en granit mindesten, udhugget af Volckaert fra Gent: "I dette hus blev digteren Karel van de Woestijne født den 10-3-1878."
