Bolig for den Gentiske historiker og faktor (= digter-præsident) for rederikerne Maria T'Heeren, Marcus van Vaernewyck (1518-1569). Hans mest kendte værker er Historie van Belgis (=Flandern) og hans øjenvidneskildring af billedstormen i Van de beroerlicke tijden in die Nederlanden en voornamelijk in Ghendt 1566-1568. På gavlen har hans buste stået siden 1880, under den hans livssæd "Laet vaeren nydt", støttet af halen fra to delfiner (symbol på anseelse og kampånd). I det 17. århundrede var huset kendt som De bonte mantele.
