Lige foran bygningen af Palæet for Akademierne står en marmorstatue af Adolphe Quetelet.
Selve palæet er en neoklassicistisk bygning fra 1823-1828. Billedhugger Charles-Auguste Fraikin fik til opgave at lave et statue til ære for Adolphe Quetelet, som udover at være grundlægger af det Kgl. Observatorium også var sekretær for det Kgl. Akademi i Belgien (hvor han allerede blev medlem i en alder af 24 år) og stifter af naturvidenskaben i Samfundet. Indvielsen af statuen fandt sted den 11. maj 1880.
I dette palæ blev også den Internationale Astronomiske Union (IAU) grundlagt i sommeren 1919. Denne union ville blandt andet realisere Carte du ciel projektet.
