Killarneys turist historie går tilbage til mindst midten af det 18. århundrede, da Thomas, fjerde Viscount Kenmare (Lord Kenmare), begyndte at tiltrække besøgende og nye beboere til byen. Datoen 1747 blev brugt i de seneste 250-års fejring for at ære Killarneys turist historie. Et besøg af dronning Victoria i 1861 gav byen en smule international opmærksomhed. Killarney nød stor fordel af jernbanens ankomst i juli 1853. Den britiske handelsdirektør udgiver Isaac Slater bemærkede, at der var tre hoteller i byen i 1846[16], men i 1854, et år efter jernbanens ankomst, nævnte James Fraser syv hoteller og beskrev deres placeringer.
