I Mauritshuis hænger også det berømte Puttertje af Carel Fabritius fra 1654. Maleriet spiller en central rolle i bogen De Goldfinch af Donna Tartt, som er blevet filmatiseret i den ligeså betitlede film.
Navnet putter blev oprindeligt kun brugt om eksemplarer, der blev holdt i fangenskab, og havde lært at hente vand med for eksempel en thimble ved en snor fra en skål, der befandt sig under dem. Med andre ord: fra en distelfink kunne der laves en putter.
I det 17. århundredes Holland, hvor putteren lige netop var blevet populær, kunne fuglen repræsentere opfindsomhed og vedholdenhed.
