Bønden var tidligere en af de vigtigste led i vandforvaltningens historie. Det er den tidligere dræningsbøsse for polder Stolwijk, hvor det overskydende vand blev ledt ud via oprindelige møller og senere pumpe ved Gouderak i Hollandse IJssel. Det tilstødende naturområde (til venstre) hedder også De Stolwijkse Bødem og består af ø-ras, vand, mosekrat og fugtig lavbundsgræs. På højre side står der stadig en gammel sluse med sluseport.
