Spalbeek ist die westlichste Teilgemeinde von Hasselt und liegt an der N2, der Verbindungsstraße zwischen Hasselt und Diest. Im Norden von Spalbeek fließt die Demer, während die Südgrenze durch die Herk gebildet wird.
Spalbeek, das im Übergangsbereich zwischen den Kempen und dem feuchten Haspengouw liegt, war in der Vergangenheit ein landwirtschaftliches Dorf, hat sich jedoch seit den 1970er Jahren zu einem Wohnort entwickelt.
