Dies ist einer der 5 Grüngürtel in der Region Gent. Der Wunderwald wird im Auftrag von Natur und Wald in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Gent und der Gemeinde Lochristi gebaut. Der erste Teil wurde am 29. November 2024 eröffnet.
Wie der Name schon vermuten lässt, war es ursprünglich geplant, dass dies ein Flughafen wird. Die typische Form ist noch gut auf Karten und Luftbildern zu sehen.
Manche kennen es vielleicht vom Fischteich, dem Exekutionsort oder der Sandentnahme.
Im angrenzenden Exekutionsort wurden im Zweiten Weltkrieg Widerstandskämpfer hingerichtet. Das Gelände weist viele Hügel und Bunker auf, in denen früher Munition gelagert wurde. Der Gedenkort ist als Landschaft geschützt.
