Legende des Narren von Brügge
Nachdem Maximilian I. von Österreich im Kampf um die Autonomie eine Zeit lang inhaftiert worden war, verbot dieser die Abhaltung von Jahrmärkten und anderen Festlichkeiten.
In einem Versuch, ihn zu besänftigen , veranstaltete Brügge eine große Party für ihn und bat dann um Erlaubnis, einen weiteren Jahrmarkt abzuhalten, Steuern einzutreiben und ... ein neues Irrenhaus zu bauen .
Er antwortete: " Schließen Sie alle Tore von Brügge und Sie haben ein Irrenhaus!".
