Der Simplonpass liegt auf 2008 m. (oder 6589 ft.). Sie verbindet die Penninen Alpen und die Lepontinischen Alpen in der Schweiz. Sie verbindet Brig im Kanton Wallis mit Domodossola im Piemont (Italien).
Internationale Bedeutung erlangte der Pass während der napoleonischen Besatzung. Zwischen 1801 und 1805 wurde auf Anweisung des Kaisers eine Straße gebaut, um Artilleriegeschütze über den Pass zwischen dem Rhonetal und Italien zu transportieren. Seitdem ist der Pass für Postkutschen nutzbar und wurde Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts durch Postautos ersetzt.
Der Simplontunnel wurde Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in der Nähe des Passes gebaut, um den Schienenverkehr zwischen den beiden Ländern zu transportieren.
