Brakel ist eine Stadt im Kreis Höxter im Osten von Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sie erstreckt sich auf etwa 174 km² Fläche und zählt rund 15.000 Einwohner. Für den heutigen Ortsnamen gibt es die historischen Bezeichnungen Brakele, Bracle und Brabecke.
Brakel liegt im Mittelpunkt des Kreises Höxter zwischen Eggegebirge und Weser im Oberwälder Land , 30 km östlich von Paderborn und 15 km südwestlich von Höxter. Die Stadt liegt im Naturpark Teutoburger Wald / Eggegebirge.
