Der Stadtteil Bochum-Innenstadt liegt im Zentrum von Bochum und im Stadtbezirk Bochum-Mitte. Er wird von der Stadt auch Bochum-City genannt.
Im Mittelalter war Bochum ein beschauliches Städtchen insbesondere mit Fachwerkhäusern. Die Stadt besaß Stadtrechte, aber nie eine Stadtmauer. Der Bochumer Arzt und Schriftsteller Kortum fertigte 1790 eine Karte an, die noch überliefert ist. Die letzten Gassen mit Fachwerkhäusern befanden sich im Gerberviertel nahe der Propsteikirche. Dieser Bereich markiert den ältesten Teil der Stadt, der auf einen Königshof von Karl dem Großen zurückgehen soll. Viele weitere Straßen der Innenstadt verlaufen gerade und sind Chauseen in preußischer Tradition.
