Der Tradition nach predigte der Apostel Jakobus zum ersten Mal in Iria Flavia während seines Aufenthalts in Hispania. Bald nach seinem Tod brachten seine Jünger Theodor und Athanasius seinen Kopf und seinen Körper in einem Steinschiff von Jerusalem nach Iria. Sie machten das Schiff an einem Pedrón (galicisch für großen Stein) fest, daher der neue Toponym, der dem Ort gegeben wurde. Die beiden Jünger blieben in Iria Flavia (heute Padrón), um zu predigen, nachdem sie den Apostel in Compostela beerdigt hatten, und der legendäre Pedrón kann heute in der Pfarrkirche Santiago de Padrón gesehen werden.
