Der Bergkamm von Thiaumont wurde von den einen und den anderen immer wieder erobert und wieder aufgegeben. Auf dem Bergkamm befinden sich ein Bauernhof im Osten und ein 1887 errichtetes Werk im Westen. Zwischen diesen beiden Punkten befindet sich heute das große Beinhaus von Douaumont.
Von dem von der deutschen Artillerie zerschossenen Werk blieben nur einige Metallstangen und vereinzelte Betonblöcke übrig. Am 23. Juni startete eine heftige deutsche Offensive von diesem Bergkamm aus und verschlang das Werk unter einem Granatendach.
