Im 15. Jahrhundert erbaut und im 18. Jahrhundert verstärkt, stützt die Große Mauer das Gelände, auf dem die Kirche und der Vorplatz stehen. Sie erfüllt sowohl eine Verteidigungsfunktion (Wall) als auch eine städtebauliche Funktion (Stützmauer). Es sind noch einige Abschnitte der etwa 350 Meter langen Mauer der Befestigungsanlage aus dem 14. Jahrhundert erhalten. Acht der neun befestigten Tore, die als Zollstation dienten, wurden während der Religionskriege zerstört. Nur das Tor von Lyon unter der Großen Mauer ist erhalten geblieben.
