It is located northeast east of Rijs and north of Oudemirdum, under which it formally falls. Schouw is located on the Gaasterland forests and on the south side of the sand hole and nature reserve the Wyldemerk, which is also called Schouw. The hamlet originated at the place where the Spookhoekstervaart and the Van Swinderenvaart meet. In 1844 there was talk of a house near the ferry and from that the hamlet was created. Schouw is another name for a ferry, and the place name is derived from it. In 2018, the hamlet consists of four houses, which were five for a while.
