El Alpbachtal es lo que los geólogos llaman un anticlinal abierto. Son capas que están plegadas en forma de una A (ver figura). El núcleo (o capa inferior) de ese anticlinal está compuesto de pizarras. Pero la mayor parte de la cima de esa 'A' en el valle de Alpbach está erosionada (=abierta). Esto tiene que ver con el hecho de que las pizarras se desgastan mucho más rápido que, por ejemplo, la capa de piedra caliza un poco más joven. La pizarra también retiene agua, por lo que el agua penetra poco en ella y fluye principalmente de su superficie. Esto provoca que también se erosione más rápido que la piedra caliza que se encuentra principalmente en las cumbres situadas al norte (Gratlspitze y Hochstrickl).
La pizarra data del Ordovícico. La piedra caliza del Devónico.
