La Puerta de Wal formaba parte de la muralla defensiva de Gante del siglo XII. El agua que fluye por debajo del puente proviene del Escalda y circula por el Ketelvest, un canal que fue excavado a mediados del siglo XII. La tierra extraída de las obras de excavación se arrojó en el lado de la ciudad, formando un muro. El Ketelvest marcaba el límite entre la denominada aldea de San Pedro - que pertenecía a la abadía - y la ciudad de Gante. Gira a la izquierda en la gran esquina de Huidevetter y baja por las escaleras al sendero junto al agua para caminar hacia la Puerta de Ketel.
