El nombre Julémont se deriva de Mons Julius, "la montaña de Julio (César)". Según una historia, sobre la cual los historiadores no están de acuerdo, Julio César habría establecido un campamento aquí, porque fue detenido un invierno por Ambiorix. Después de ese invierno, llegaron refuerzos de Roma, tras lo cual Ambiorix fue derrotado en el río Berwinne, en el lugar donde ahora se encuentra el pueblo de Mortroux, cuyo nombre significa "hoyo de los muertos".
