En 1855 había una capilla de paja en Houthulst. Esta fue construida por iniciativa de la familia Cassiers. En 1857 Houthulst se convirtió en parroquia. Un año después se inició la construcción de la iglesia. Después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la iglesia fue completamente destruida y fue reconstruida entre 1921 y 1922, en estilo neorrománico, pero ahora en un lugar diferente como resultado del plan de desalojo. El arquitecto de la iglesia fue el mismo que el del ayuntamiento, Joseph Viérin. Creó un gran espacio de una nave de 41 por 11 metros y un transepto que alberga 2 altares laterales.
