La reserva de más de 100 hectáreas fue establecida en 1970 y comprende un remanente de brezo y una zona de bosque de coníferas. En la reserva se encuentra la mayor población de enebros que aún existe en Flandes, con alrededor de 7000 arbustos. El Heiderbos está protegido a nivel europeo como parte del área Natura 2000 'Bosbeekvallei y áreas boscosas y de brezo adyacentes en As-Opglabbeek-Maaseik'. Desde 2018 es parte del Parque Nacional Hoge Kempen.
