El castillo de Chillon se hizo popular gracias a Lord Byron, quien escribió el poema El Prisionero de Chillon (1816) sobre François de Bonivard, un monje y político ginebrino que estuvo encarcelado allí de 1530 a 1536; Byron también grabó su nombre en una columna del calabozo. El castillo es uno de los escenarios de la novela corta de Henry James, Daisy Miller (1878).
