Semur-en-Auxois tiene un núcleo medieval. La ciudad está construida sobre un bloque de granito rosa, rodeado por el río Armançon. El río fue ampliamente utilizado por las curtidurías y movió muchos molinos. Ahora el caudal ha disminuido mucho debido a una presa que forma el Lac de Pont. Esta fue construida en el siglo XIX para abastecer de agua al Canal de Borgoña.
