La llanura de Messinia es un sistema de graben: un bloque geológico que descendió en relación con los dos bloques que ascendieron (horsts). En el lado este: la cordillera de Taygetos, al oeste las montañas de Kyparissia. Este graben se llenó con depósitos de ríos y mar (principalmente arcilla) formando la fértil llanura de Messinia. También es aquí donde el río Nedon encontró su camino entre las cadenas montañosas hacia el golfo de Messinia.
