La iglesia y el monasterio de los Frailes Menores Franciscanos datan del año 1364 .
A partir del siglo XVII el monasterio fue ampliado y renovado . Debido al colapso de la nave, la iglesia fue cerrada al culto en 1927 y sometida a una serie de restauraciones en los años 1970.
El monasterio sirvió como hospital y hoy alberga la sede representativa del Centro Científico Cultural Ettore Maiorana.
La Iglesia de San Francisco también es conocida como la Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción, porque alberga la estatua de la Virgen Inmaculada, que sale en procesión cada año el 8 de diciembre.
