En 1918 se fundó la Real Industria Salina Neerlandesa en Boekelo, un precursor de AkzoNobel. La empresa recibió en 1933 la concesión para cavar en busca de sal también en Hengelo. Al año siguiente se instaló la primera torre de perforación para bombear agua de las capas de sal. A principios de 1935 salió la primera sal del suelo y en 1936 se construyó una fábrica de sal cerca del Canal de Twente. De las ochenta torres que se construyeron en los años siguientes, quedan siete. Tres de ellas han recibido el estatus de monumento. Las torres estuvieron en uso hasta 1963, cuando fueron reemplazadas por pequeños edificios de bombeo.
