Les habitants de Herentals portent les surnoms "Klokkenververs" et "Peestekers". Sainte-Waldetrudis est la patronne de la ville. Autrefois, c'était une ville avec un commerce de draps florissant. Aujourd'hui, c'est un centre urbain de soins avec une industrie variée (industrie alimentaires, métallurgique, textile et de la chaussure, taille de diamants) et le long de l'autoroute Boudewijnautosnelweg une zone industrielle de 268 ha comprenant notamment une grande entreprise électrotechnique.
Quelques attractions à Herentals incluent entre autres : l'église Sainte-Waldetrudis avec un intéressant retable du début du 16e siècle, le béguinage fondé en 1266, la Halle aux Draps avec le beffroi de 1590, un monument de la Guerre des Paysans et de nombreux autres.
