Ici, au bord de l'Escaut à Audenaarde, se sont déroulés en 1572 des événements terribles. Les réformés n'hésitaient pas à défier ouvertement le gouvernement espagnol à cette époque. En 1572, les gueux des bois, sous la direction de Jacob Blommaert, prirent la ville d'Audenaarde. Avec le soutien d'Orange, ils établirent une administration municipale calviniste. Selon la légende, ils attachaient les prêtres catholiques les mains et les pieds et les jetaient dans l'Escaut. Lorsque Alva fut en route un mois plus tard, les partisans de Blommaert prirent la fuite. Le chef des gueux des bois fut encerclé par les Espagnols et mourut d'une mort infâme près d'Eeklo.
