La réserve de plus de 100 hectares a été créée en 1970 et comprend un vestige de lande et une zone forestière de conifères. La réserve abrite la plus grande population de genévriers encore existante de Flandre, avec environ 7000 buissons. La Heiderbos est protégée au niveau européen en tant que partie du site Natura 2000 'Bosbeekvallei et zones forestières et de lande adjacentes à As-Opglabbeek-Maaseik'. Depuis 2018, elle fait partie du Parc National des Hautes Fagnes.
