Le nom de la rue "Befferstraat" peut sembler être un nom de rue remarquable pour les esprits malicieux. Mais l'origine du nom est moins obscène que ce que l'on pourrait penser. Pour l'origine et la signification du nom de la rue, plusieurs hypothèses ont été avancées, à savoir "rue derrière le Belfort" ou une appellation dérivée de "Befferen" : un domaine de la famille de Beffere au 13ème siècle, ou de Philip Snoy, seigneur de Befferen dans la première moitié du 17ème siècle. Le nom pourrait également faire référence au Befferhof situé au-dessus de Pasbrug, en tant qu'ancien siège du tribunal du pays de Malines.
