Badajoz est une grande ville frontalière comptant 150 000 habitants. Badajoz bénéficie de sa bonne situation sur la rivière Guadiana et profite grandement du commerce entre le Portugal et l'Espagne. La ville a un climat méditerranéen continental avec des influences atlantiques. Les étés y sont chauds avec des températures maximales avoisinant les 45 degrés Celsius.
La ville a été réétablie au 9ème siècle par les Arabes sur le site d'un ancien établissement des Wisigoths. La ville connaît un essor rapide. En 1230, elle est reprise par le roi Alphonse IX de León. La ville reste très importante et est régulièrement le témoin de guerres frontalières entre l'Espagne et le Portugal.
