Des recherches archéologiques ont montré que la région de Houten était habitée dès l'âge du bronze. On y a également trouvé l'ancienne voie Limes, la frontière de l'Empire romain aux Pays-Bas, le long de l'Oude Rijn. La voie Limes était la route principale utilisée par les Romains pour relier les nombreux castella le long du Limes. La route s'étendait de l'actuelle Allemagne jusqu'à Katwijk, suivant la rive gauche du Rhin.
