La porte d'eau de Monnikendam a été construite au début du 15ème siècle comme partie des deuxième remparts de la ville et se compose de deux tours rondes, reliées par une arcade. Très probablement, elle doit son nom aux moines augustins qui étaient établis à proximité au Sint Andrieskamp.
Particulièrement, il s'agit d'une combinaison à la fois d'une porte d'eau et d'une porte terrestre. La Heiligenbergerbeek entre ici dans la ville depuis la vallée du Gueldre.
Lorsque vers 1840 on a commencé à démolir les anciens remparts de la ville, le Monnikendam a été intégré dans l'aménagement du nouveau parc selon le design du paysagiste J.D. Zocher jr.
