L' église originale a été construite au 12ème siècle .
L'église fut offerte à l'archevêque de Braga João Peculiar par Pedro Aurives et son épouse Gelvira Midiz le 12 juillet 1161. Francisco Sanches fut baptisé dans cette église. L' église actuelle fut construite par l'archevêque Gaspar Bragança et est reliée à la chapelle de Coimbras. Le saint patron de l'église est Jean Baptiste et c'est ici que naquirent les grandes fêtes de Saint Jean de Braga .
