È stato qui al Kärntnertortheater che Beethoven ha suonato la sua Nona Sinfonia per la prima volta al pubblico venerdì 7 maggio 1842. È stato un grande successo inaspettato. Beethoven insistette nel salire sul palco, accanto al direttore d'orchestra per indicare il tempo. E non era così evidente, poiché a chi doveva guardare l'orchestra per seguire il tempo? Inoltre, avevano avuto solo 4 giorni per provare il brano.
