Sulla linea ferroviaria Maarssen-Utrecht, lo scienziato Christophe Buys Ballot il 3 giugno 1845 condusse esperimenti attorno all'effetto Doppler (l'effetto per cui le note alte scendono quando vengono emesse da un veicolo in transito). Posizionò alcuni corni sul treno per emettere un tono costante. Le osservazioni lungo la ferrovia dovevano ascoltare quanto fosse differente il tono al passaggio. Doppler aveva calcolato che a 70 km/h una b avrebbe suonato mezzo tono più alto (come un do).
L'esperimento fallì a causa dell'incapacità di mantenere un'altezza tonale costante, della velocità variabile del treno e della difficoltà di udire a causa del rumore del treno.
