Hoe erg het gesteld was in Vlaanderen tijdens de crisisjaren 1845-1850 door misoogsten en cholera wordt fantastisch geïllustreerd door Maarten Van Ginderachter in zijn uitstekend boek Arm Vlaanderen:
"In Nederbrakel ontstond in februari 1847 een ware volkstoeloop toen een hondenbezitter zijn trouwe viervoeter doodde, vilde en het karkas te koop aanbood. Er zouden 300 mensen op het gerucht zijn afgekomen dat er goedkoop vlees te verkrijgen was."
