De naam Julémont is afgeleid van Mons Julius, "de berg van Julius (Caesar)". Volgens een verhaal, waar historici het echter niet over eens zijn, zou Julius Caesar hier een kamp hebben opgeslagen, omdat hij één winter werd tegengehouden door Ambiorix. Na die winter kwam versterking uit Rome, waarna Ambiorix aan de rivier de Berwinne verslagen werd, op de plek waar nu het dorp Mortroux ligt, die naam betekent "gat der doden".
