Middenin de drie landingsbanen van Brussels Airport, wordt van hieruit door vele vluchtleiders alle vliegbewegingen begeleid van landen, taxiën tot opstijgen.
Op enkele meters ten zuiden dwarste vroeger de Romeinse Baan van, vermoedelijk Batavia (Leiden), via Hoogstraten en Elewijt, via deze velden richting Waver, Namen naar Trier.
Later (14-15de eeuw) was dit een deel van de Boergondische Noord-zuid verbinding vanuit Mechelen naar Dijon en Zeeland.
