De Simplonpas ligt op 2008 meter hoogte (of 6589 voet). Hij verbindt de Walliser Alpen met de Lepontinische Alpen in Zwitserland. Hij verbindt Brig in het kanton Wallis met Domodossola in Piëmont (Italië).
De pas verwierf internationale betekenis tijdens de Napoleontische bezetting. Tussen 1801 en 1805 werd in opdracht van de keizer een weg aangelegd om artilleriestukken via de pas tussen de Rhônevallei en Italië te vervoeren. Sindsdien wordt de pas gebruikt door postkoetsen, die begin twintigste eeuw werden vervangen door postbussen.
De Simplontunnel werd begin 20e eeuw onder de pas aangelegd om treinverkeer tussen de twee landen mogelijk te maken.
