In de middeleeuwen was de stad opmerkelijk rijk dankzij de zouthandel. Er waren verschillende zoutpannen rondom de stad. Het zout werd geëxporteerd naar de omliggende heerlijkheden. Langs de Oude Zoutroute werd het via Lauenburg naar Lübeck vervoerd en vandaar naar alle Baltische kusten verscheept.
